Electrical Testing

Portable Appliance Testing (PAT)

PAT testing legislation was put into effect to ensure that all companies conform to the Health and Safety at Work Act of 1974, Electricity at Work Regulations of 1989, Provision and Use of Work Equipment regulations of 1998 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work regulations of 1999.

PAT testing law requires that all landlords, employers and even self-employed individuals make sure that their portable electrical appliances are safe and are suitable and used for the purposes intended. These appliances should always be maintained properly and remain in good working order.

The guidelines are designed to make certain that this equipment is kept protected and is preserved through regular maintenance as well as inspections and periodic testing. Damage and fault can occur with all electrical equipment use which makes it essential that these items are tested regularly for safety.

Our PAT testing service involves our engineer coming to your premises to conduct the PAT testing. This service can be carried outside of working hours to minimise the impact on your working day.

Fixed Wire Testing

Fixed wire testing involves testing and inspecting the electrical systems and installations within a building. This is usually the responsibility of the landlord or building management but it can also be the responsibility of a company renting the premises. A check of your tenancy agreement or with building management will determine where responsibility lies.

Regular testing of a building’s wiring structure and maintenance is mandatory by law under The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 and IET Wiring Regulations BS 7671:2008. Fixed wire testing is also usually mandatory for insurance purposes.

Fixed wire testing should be carried out every 5 years for commercial offices.
Following testing, you will be issued an Electrical Certificate of Compliance (EICR), certifying the condition of the entire electrical system within your premises, including electrical wiring, circuits, accessories and connections.

Fixed wire testing checks the condition of the electrics against the UK standard for the safety of electrical installations, BS 7671. Each circuit’s cable and accessories is inspected for visual damage and wear and tear, followed by a series of tests to verify the wiring is safe and the circuit is wired correctly.

Fixed wire testing is a legal requirement for any organisation to ensure compliance with legal requirements to ensure the building’s electrical system is safe, maintained and tested by competent, qualified individuals. In doing so you are ensuring the provision of a safe and hazard-free environment for employees, visitors and the public at large.
